Mandate
  • Development of feeding strategies to optimize livestock productivity

  • Develop prediction models for near infra-red spectroscopy for fast and cost effective feed testing

  • Production of multifunctional feed additives for better livestock production and immunity enhancement

  • Isolation, identification and exploitation of functional microorganisms for developing feed additives, design dietary interventions and to reduce reliance on antimicrobials against gut challenges, promoting a sustainable and eco-friendly poultry and livestock farming

Ongoing Research Activities

  • Optimize animal productivity using indigenous feed resources using simulation models and rapid quality testing

  • An extensive initiative encompasses collection and screening of samples from rural and commercial poultry for collection of functional microorganisms

  • Establishing a culture bank containing a diverse microbial collection with focus on Lactobacilli and Saccharomyces spp.  as a valuable resource for on-going and future research

  • Isolation and application of lactic acid bacteria as a prophylactic measure against poultry enteric pathogens to combat anti-microbial resistance

Research Achievements

  • Adopted simulation of anaerobic fermentation to assess enteric methane emission from livestock and assess digestibility using in vitro gas production method

  • Develop rapid screening method for collection of Lactobacilli spp. validated through MALDI TOF MS

  • Identified and implemented probiotic-formulations that significantly reduced the enteric pathogen s load in poultry model

  • Developed feed supplementation strategies like urea molasses nutrient blocks. A high nutrient density feed supplement (NIAB Nutrilick) with the addition of selenium enriched yeast and lactic acid bacteria has been developed targeting high animal productivity with boosting the immune system in present climatic conditions

  • Developed facility for isolation and propagation of desired bacteria under microaerophilic and anaerobic environment

  • Developed facility for rapid real time feed/fodder testing using near infra-red reflectance spectroscopy

  • Developed technology for rational utilization of saline and saline sodic soils for successful livestock production

Future Directions

  • Adopt photonic tools for improvement of livestock productivity

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning for efficient livestock and poultry production

  • Evaluating nutritional strategies to improve livestock productivity with a positive climate impact

  • Provision of analytical services for nutrient profiling and feed supplement to farmers community for uplifting the socioeconomic status

Funded Projects

PARB-20-380 titled Cost-effective production of probiotics and their evaluation as feed additive to control enteric infections in poultry 2022-2025 (PKR 26.850 Million)
